Sprinklers quell complex fire

A fire alarm alerted residents in a northeast apartment complex Wednesday afternoon, allowing them to evacuate the building safely before Fort Wayne firefighters arrived.

Firefighters were called to Savana Springs Apartments at 3706 Goeglein Road at 3:35 p.m.

A fire had originated in the bedroom of a second-floor apartment and was nearly extinguished by a sprinkler system, according to the fire department.

Smoke and fire damage were minimal, but the apartment where the fire started and the unit below sustained heavy water damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
