Scorched Art Van store closed day after fire

– Art Van Furniture, which was hit by a fire shortly after closing Friday night, remained closed Saturday.

Its neighbors, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Petco, which were evacuated Friday night, were open for business.

Firefighters were called at 9:07 p.m. and discovered flames and heavy smoke in the interior wall and ceiling of the front of the building at 311 Coliseum Blvd. E., near Coldwater Road. The fire was under control in about an hour but is still under investigation.

Deputy Fire Chief Mark Nelson said preventing the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings was labor intensive. A small amount of smoke got into Dick’s through a vent but was contained.

Workers inspecting the damage were cleaning up debris in front of the furniture store Saturday. Paper signs on the front doors said “Closed.”

The store opened Feb. 8.
