Furniture store remains closed after Friday night fire

Art Van Furniture, which was hit by a fire shortly after closing time Friday night, remained closed today.

Its neighbors, Dicks Sporting Goods and Petco, which were evacuated Friday night, were open for business.

Firefighters discovered fire and heavy smoke in the interior wall and ceiling of the front of the building at 311 E. Coliseum Blvd., near Coldwater Road. The fire was under control in about an hour.

Deputy Fire Chief Mark Nelson said preventing the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings was labor intensive. A small amount of smoke got into Dick's through a vent but was contained.

Workers were at the furniture store today, cleaning up debris left in front of the store. Paper signs on the front doors said "Closed."

The store opened Feb. 8 in what was formerly Ashley Furniture HomeStore.
