Reckless homicide charge filed in crash

– A 19-year-old man was charged Friday in a March 31 crash on Tonkel Road that killed a woman and seriously injured her husband.

Daniel B. Heffner of Garrett is charged with reckless homicide.

He was driving his Cadillac on Tonkel Road, south of Schlatter Road, at 3:24 p.m. March 31 when he rear-ended a vehicle driven by Robert E. Bockius, according to court documents.

Heffner was traveling more than 85 mph when he crashed into Bockius’ Impala, court documents said. The speed limit on Tonkel Road is 55 mph.

The crash caused Bockius’ vehicle to flip and roll several times before stopping in a field, according to the Allen County Sheriff’s Department.

Doris M. Bockius, 75, was a passenger in the vehicle being driven by her husband and became trapped in the car after the vehicle rolled.

Doris Bockius, of Angola, was transported to Parkview Regional Medical Center in critical condition and died on April 10 as a result of her injuries.

She was the owner and operator of American Hair Cutters in Merrillville. Robert Bockius was transported to the medical center in serious condition but later recovered.

Heffner had not been arrested as of Friday night.
