Police unit to target gangs, violence

The creation of a Gang and Violent Crimes Unit of the Fort Wayne Police Department that Mayor Tom Henry alluded to his State of the City address Wednesday is official.

Police Chief Garry Hamilton announced Friday the department’s Neighborhood Response Team and its Gang Unit will be combined into one 15-member Gang and Violent Crimes Unit to target individuals known to be involved in gangs or violent crime.

“Our message is simple,” Hamilton said in a statement. “Our community is demanding that the shootings stop.”
