‘Gravity,’ ‘Ranger’ win visual effects honors

The Visual Effects Society honored two Oscar hopefuls with top awards Wednesday night.

The effects team for “Gravity” won for outstanding visual effects in a visual effects-driven feature motion picture. The team for “The Lone Ranger” won for outstanding supporting visual effects in a feature motion picture.

Both films are nominated in the Academy Awards best visual effects category along with “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” “Iron Man 3” and “Star Trek Into Darkness.”

The team behind “Frozen” won the honor for animation in an animated feature motion picture as well as several other animated feature honors. “Desolation of Smaug” won with its titular dragon for animated character in a live action feature, while “Gravity” won the rest of the group’s live action film awards. Television awards went to “Game of Thrones” and “Banshee.” Video game and advertising honors were also presented.

The Academy Awards, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, will air March 2 on ABC.
