Effects group lauds 2 Oscar hopefuls

The Visual Effects Society honored two Oscar hopefuls with top awards Wednesday night.

The effects team for “Gravity” won for outstanding visual effects in a visual effects-driven feature motion picture. The team for “The Lone Ranger” won for outstanding supporting visual effects in a feature motion picture.

Both films are nominated in the Academy Awards best visual effects category along with “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” “Iron Man 3” and “Star Trek Into Darkness.”

The team behind “Frozen” won the honor for animation in an animated feature motion picture. Other film honors went to:

  • Animated character in a live action feature: “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” Smaug
  • Animated character in an animated feature: “Frozen,” bringing the Snow Queen to life
  • Created environment in a live action feature: “Gravity,” exterior
  • Created environment in an animated feature: “Frozen,” Elsa’s ice palace
  • Virtual Cinematography in a live action feature: “Gravity”
  • Models in a feature: “Gravity,” ISS exterior
  • FX and simulation animation in a live action feature: “Gravity,” parachute and ISS destruction
  • FX and simulation animation in an animated feature: “Frozen,” Elsa’s blizzard
  • Compositing in a feature: “Gravity”
  • Television awards went to “Game of Thrones” and “Banshee.”
The Academy Awards will be March 2.
