22-year-old accused in extended assault

Court documents accuse 22-year-old Brandon R. Pernell of an hours-long assault on a woman he knew beginning sometime either late Friday night or early Saturday morning.

Pernell, of the 4700 block of Plaza Drive, is charged with rape, criminal deviate conduct, strangulation, intimidation, and battery.

According to court documents, he attacked the woman after an argument with her inside her apartment. What began as him slapping and hitting her ended in kicks, a sexual assault and her fleeing the apartment, naked into sub-zero temperatures, to escape him.

At one point during the assault, Pernell threatened to shoot her grandmother if the woman tried to escape, according to court documents.

The woman finally escaped and police found her in the vehicle of a passer-by she flagged down for help. She had cuts around her eyes, as well as bruises and scratches all over her body, according to court documents.

Officers found Pernell sitting inside his vehicle in the parking lot.

He told them he could not be arrested because he had left the apartment, according to court documents
