3rd Republican bids for state treasurer nomination

A third candidate has filed for the Indiana Republican Party’s nomination for state treasurer.

Winchester resident Don Bates Jr., a financial adviser who sought GOP nominations for a U.S. Senate seat in 2010 and a U.S. House seat in 2012, submitted his candidacy filing Tuesday, the state party said.

He joins treasurer’s office employee Kelly Mitchell of Indianapolis, who filed Monday, and Marion Mayor Wayne Seybold, who filed in January, as candidates for the GOP nomination on the Nov. 4 general-election ballot.

The nominee will be selected June 7 at the GOP state convention at Grand Wayne Center in downtown Fort Wayne.

The Indiana Constitution prohibits Republican Treasurer Richard Mourdock from seeking a third consecutive four-year term.

No one has filed for the Democratic nomination for treasurer. The filing deadline is May 23.
