Fort Wayne police officers and Emergency Services Team members return to their staging area after searching a home on Creighton Street.

Search of home comes up empty

Robbery report starts police action

– Armor-clad police with guns drawn searched a home just south of downtown Sunday afternoon but came out empty-handed.

About 1:15 p.m. Fort Wayne police responded to a report of an armed robbery in the 600 block of Creighton Avenue, spokesman Michael Joyner said, after a man called police and said he had been approached by two young men with handguns who stopped his vehicle, robbed him of his cash and pistol- whipped him.

At some point, Joyner said, the victim was able to speed off from the perpetrators, but in doing so hit at least one with his vehicle, knocking him to the ground.

Police arriving on the scene detained two people, who were being questioned as persons of interest in the case, Joyner said.

Witnesses gave conflicting reports, however, on whether there were two perpetrators or three, and some witnesses said one of the perpetrators ran into a home in the 600 block of Creighton, leading officers to cordon off the area and send in the Critical Response Team and the Emergency Services Team.

Joyner said the victim was treated by medics at the scene and released.

Streets around the house were blocked and the parking lot at the nearby Pontiac library branch and Fort Wayne Urban League were filled with police vehicles.

An armored truck and the department’s hostage rescue vehicle were in front of the house while teams in body armor, helmets and shields moved through the snow to enter the house.

Police made contact with the people in the home, at least six of whom were evacuated, Joyner said, and the owner gave consent for the house to be searched.

A robot was used to clear the house, after which CRT and EST members entered and cleared the house.

When nothing was found, they then searched the garage, again with guns drawn.

The teams left the house about 4:25 p.m.; no suspect was found.

The case remains under investigation.
