Defiance explosion starts fire

An explosion at SensoryEffects Powder Systems in Defiance, Ohio, sent two workers to hospitals early Friday.

Shortly after 4:30 a.m., the Defiance Fire and Rescue Division was called to a fire at SensoryEffects, 111 W. High St., according to the Defiance County Sheriff’s Department.

SensoryEffects is a food and beverage company that develops complete systems, including ingredients and flavorings, to finished products, according to the company’s website.

The Defiance location develops specialty powders for food formulators and manufacturers, the website says.

The fire was extinguished a short time later, and minimal fire damage was reported. The building sustained structural damage from the explosion. It was not clear Friday what caused the explosion, officials said.

Two injured workers were transported to hospitals. Their conditions were not released Friday. The explosion and fire are under investigation by the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office.
