Lwin Moe Aung, a 7th grader from Lutheran South Unity School, won the Journal Gazette’s 60th Annual Allen County Spelling Bee presented by Touchstone Energy in partnership with Barrett & McNagny LLP on Saturday, February 1, 2014. Lwin correctly spelled furlough to win the bee. Furlough is defined as a leave of absence granted to a governmental or institutional employee (as a solder, civil servant, or missionary).
During the bee, Lwin also correctly spelled finesse, cilantro, parapet, and homogeneous correctly.
Lwin will represent Allen County at the Area Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at IPFW’s Rhinehart Music Center. He will compete with winners from 15 northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio counties for a chance to represent The Journal Gazette and Touchstone Energy at the 87th Annual Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. in May of 2014.
Susan Chen, an 8th grader from Woodside Middle School finished second. She misspelled egalitarian (spelling egaliterian) placing as runner up. Susan will be asked to participate in the Area Spelling Bee if Lwin is unavailable to attend.
