Keep track of those Super Bowl calories

Chances are good you already have your menu planned for the big game on Sunday, or maybe you have an idea of what food you will pick up before kickoff at 6:25 p.m.

But what many football fans may not have considered is how many calories they are racking up with those slices of pizza, chicken wings, potato chips and soda.

It’s estimated that more than 108 million people will watch the Super Bowl this year, and of those watching, the average viewer will consume nearly 2,000 calories during the game, according to the Calorie Control Council.

Obviously food is a big part of the game for fans, so instead of cutting it out, try cutting back or making food items a little healthier.

Charles Platkin, editor of DietDetective.com and a professor at Hunter College and City University of New York School of Public Health, offers these tips for making your favorite football foods healthier.

He also offers up the exercise equivalents of each tasty item.

Food: Footlong Italian sub

Working it off: Walking 16.2 miles

Fit tip: Skip the mayo and cheese and go for Subway’s Fresh Fit menu to cut half the calories.

Food: One Doritos chip (12 3/4 calories)

Working it off: Dancing to Bruno Mars’ “Locked Out of Heaven” (3.54 minutes) during halftime show

Fit tip: Try a few pistachio nuts or roasted almonds instead.

Food: Four swigs of Bud Light beer (36 calories)

Working it off: Eight minutes of playing professional football

Fit tip: Sample some different light beers, such as Miller 64 or Beck’s Light at only 64 calories per 12-ounce bottle, to see which ones you prefer.

Food: Single Ritz cracker (16 calories) with tablespoon Cheez Whiz (45 calories)

Working it off: 21 minutes preparing, cooking, serving and cleaning up after the Super Bowl party

Fit tip: Avoid the cracker and cut up small squares of low-fat cheese.

Food: Three slices of Pizza Hut’s Pepperoni Lover’s Pizza Works (1,320 calories)

Working it off: 332 minutes of cleaning the stadium after the game

Fit tip: Get thin-crust pizza with veggies.

Food: Four Tostitos Scoops! tortilla chips with guacamole (144 calories)

Working it off: 133 touchdown dances in the end zone

Fit tip: Guacamole is high in calories but full of nutrients. Just be mindful of how much you eat.

Food: One bowl of chili (550 calories)

Working it off: 73 minutes of cheerleading

Fit tip: Use ground sirloin or white meat turkey, or make your chili vegetarian. Skip the sour cream and cheese, or make them no- or low-fat versions.
