109 Speedway stores cited in Dec. 25 alcohol sales

Speedway convenience stores in Angola, Auburn and Wabash are among 109 in the state cited by Indiana Excise Police investigating the unlawful sale of alcohol on Christmas Day, police said today.

Excise police received an anonymous tip Dec. 26 that a Speedway store in South Bend had sold beer the previous day, excise police said in a statement.

While the officer was at that store, the statement said, a clerk who worked at a different Speedway on Dec. 25 asked whether it was illegal to sell alcohol that day, because she had done so there.

Speedway's corporate office in Enon, Ohio, cooperated throughout the investigation, the statement said.

It said Indiana law prohibits the sale of alcoholic beverages from 7 a.m. Dec. 25 to 3 a.m. Dec. 26.
