2 Toledo firefighters killed in building fire

TOLEDO, Ohio – Two firefighters battling a blaze at an apartment complex near downtown Toledo were killed on Sunday, city officials said.

Two firefighter fatalities were reported to the Lucas County coroner’s office Sunday, deputy coroner Dr. Maneesha Pandey told the Toledo Blade (http://bit.ly/MhoXVx ).

Pandey said autopsies are scheduled for Monday and that the names of the victims aren’t being released pending family notification and identification. The fire department was expected to hold a news conference Sunday night to release more details on the fatal blaze.

The firefighters were attacking the blaze around 3:30 p.m. in a six-unit apartment building on Magnolia Street near the Huron Market when they became disoriented, a battalion chief told WTOL-TV.

The firefighters were taken on stretchers to Mercy St .Vincent Medical Center, and a large crowd of Toledo Fire Department personnel gathered.

“Everyone is just numb right now,” Dan Desmond, vice president of Toledo Firefighters Local 92, told the Blade.

Ray Abou, the building’s owner, told the Blade that there were seven tenants in six apartments in the building and all are believed to be OK. One tenant told him that her pit bull puppy wasn’t able to flee the fire.
