Bank heist suspect kills self, police say

A bank robbery and police pursuit Friday night ended in an apparent suicide in southeast Kosciusko County, officials said.

Shortly after 6 p.m., the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department was told that a North Manchester police officer was pursuing a vehicle into Kosciusko County on Indiana 13. The vehicle had been involved in a robbery, the sheriff’s department said.

Indiana State Police believe the suspect entered First Financial Bank, 106 N. Market St. in North Manchester, shortly before 6 p.m. and then fled after robbing a teller.

At 6:08 p.m., the vehicle stopped at Indiana 13 and Indiana 14, but the man inside refused to exit his vehicle. Moments later, a gun was discharged from inside the vehicle, police said.

Officers determined the man was suffering from a gunshot wound and called emergency personnel.

Kosciusko County Coroner Michael Wilson later pronounced the man dead from injuries that appeared to be consistent with self-inflicted gunshot wounds, police said.

The man’s name was not released Friday.
