Double-digit wind chills persist

FORT WAYNE – Think it's cold now? Friday morning is expected to be worse.

The National Weather Service in northern Indiana says the region's brisk winds and low temperatures will continue through Friday morning.

The breezes are creating wind chills of minus 15 degrees to minus 25 degrees.

At 11:30 a.m., the weather service said it was 1 degree in Fort Wayne, with a wind chill of minus 17 degrees.

The bitter cold is expected to lift slightly Thursday afternoon, but the winds are expected to kick up in the morning and temperatures to drop.

An Arctic air mass is moving across the region, pushing temperatures to minus 5 degrees to minus 10 degrees overnight, the weather service said.

Some areas of northwest and far northern Indiana are also getting some heavy snow today. There is a 30 percent chance of snow in Fort Wayne, the weather service said.

FAQ: What does wind chill mean?

The wind chill is based on the rate of heat loss from exposed skin caused by the combined effects of wind and cold. As the wind increases, heat is carried away from the body at an accelerated rate, driving down the body temperature.

This temperature is the reading the body "feels" given the combination of wind and air temperature. At wind speeds of 4 mph or less, the wind chill temperature is the same as the air temperature.
