LAFAYETTE – Interstate 65 northbound near Lafayette remained closed late Saturday after a 13-vehicle crash in heavy snow and multiple smaller wrecks that came after it.
State police told The Journal Gazette the crash stopped traffic northbound and southbound just before 3 p.m. The southbound lanes reopened about 8 p.m., but the northbound lanes were still closed at 10:45 p.m.
Indiana State Police Sgt. Kim Riley told The Associated Press nine semis and four other vehicles were involved in the large crash, and at least one semi caught fire.
Four people were taken to hospitals with injuries that were not life-threatening. Riley didn’t know whether they were hurt in the large crash or the smaller ones. Those who were injured or stranded in vehicles have all been safely taken away from the scene, Riley said. Earlier reports said the large crash involved about 30 vehicles.
