Logistically, a third-reading vote in the House could happen Jan. 23 if the committee votes it out early next week.

Final vote on Indiana gay-marriage ban could come next week

Could a full House vote on the proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage come next Thursday?

Though the House Judiciary Committee heard testimony on Monday – and was expected to vote – the chairman called a recess and the bill is hanging in legislative limbo.

A few Republican members of that committee are publicly undecided, and leaders are working behind the scenes to avoid a defeat of the amendment and companion legislation.

Meanwhile, supporters are hosting an event next Thursday, Jan. 23, to keep the focus on the plan to bar gay marriage and civil unions.

The Indiana Family Institute's Faith and Community Leader Legislative Luncheon is scheduled that day, where Gov. Mike Pence will give a keynote address to "likeminded individuals."

Attendees will then get an update on the marriage amendment – "As part of the program you will get a tour of the Statehouse and an opportunity to meet with legislators to encourage their support of the Marriage Amendment. They will be in Session that day and may even be voting on the Marriage Amendment!" the invite said.

Indeed, logistically, a third-reading vote in the House could happen Jan. 23 if the committee votes it out early next week.
