Council agrees to give $3 million to USF project

The Fort Wayne City Council agreed Tuesday to invest $3 million in Legacy money in the University of Saint Francis' new downtown campus.

The university's $12.3 million project includes renovating two historic buildings – the former Chamber of Commerce, 826 Ewing St., and the former Scottish Rite Center, now the University of Saint Francis Performing Arts Center at 431 W. Berry St.

Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry announced a proposal Friday to invest $3 million in Legacy money to help the university with the renovation process.

Fort Wayne resident John Modezjewski addressed the council after the unanimous vote and said he did not have an issue with the $3 million, but did take issue with the city funding a Catholic university with public tax dollars.
