1-293rd called up for weather duty

FORT WAYNE – More than 100 members of the Army National Guard regiment based in Fort Wayne were called up this week for weather emergencies in northeast Indiana.

Sgt. 1st Class Aaron Tinsley, a spokesman for the Indiana National Guard in Indianapolis, said the 1st Battalion, 293rd Infantry Regiment was activated Sunday. In all, 126 members of the regiment were called up.

Tinsley said in an email that the Guard members’ duties have included transporting people to shelters, medical facilities and places of employment. Among those assisted were two dialysis patients and an employee responsible for opening a shelter.

The 1-293rd also responded to stranded motorists and performed route reconnaissance.

Tinsley said the Guard had set no end time or date for the 1-293rd’s call-up.

The Air National Guard’s 122nd Fighter Wing canceled training exercises Sunday because of heavy snow and called only essential personnel to work Monday, according to Master Sgt. Darin Hubble, public affairs superintendent at the Fort Wayne base. Those personnel included security and fire-protection forces.

Hubble said in an email that a security patrol aided a motorist who was stranded along Bluffton Road near a gate to the base.
