Northwest Ohio highways update

Statement as issued Tuesday morning by the Ohio Department of Transportation:

The following is an update regarding snow and ice operations on state highways within the Ohio Department of Transportation District 1 which includes the counties of Allen, Defiance, Hancock, Hardin, Paulding, Putnam, Van Wert and Wyandot. This report is issued periodically during the winter months and as needed during snow and ice events.

January 7, 2014 (AM)

  • 86 ODOT crews remain on the highways within the eight-county area of ODOT District 1.
  • Crews will resume treating roadways today with salt and calcium chloride to take advantage of the sun. Treating will primarily be concentrated on priority travel routes.
  • The extremely cold temperatures continue to affect the fleet, but mechanics have been successful in returning trucks to service so that all eight counties within the district may run with full crews.
  • Somewhat warming temperatures today are expected to help crews in beginning to remove ice from the highways with the goal of getting certain priority routes to a point where at least wheel tracks are visible; however, roadways will continue to be icy today through at least tomorrow.
  • Temperatures are expected to rise during the night tonight and will provide crews with a better opportunity on Wednesday to treat and see better progress in removing the packed ice from highways.
  • Local county sheriff’s departments continue to keep travel advisories in place. Motorists should check with local departments on the status of travel in their county.
  • Check for the latest in statewide road conditions.
