Pedaling his bicycle down the streets of the North Anthony Boulevard neighborhood in Fort Wayne, Drake Hogestyn would try to set records on his childhood newspaper route.
He would speed along Parnell, Kenwood and Glenwood avenues trying to beat his time from the previous day or week.
At 60, the Days of Our Lives star and Fort Wayne native says he is no longer trying to set records – but that doesn’t mean he’s stopped pushing himself.
My workouts aren’t pretty, he says by phone. They are a sweaty bomb of a mess.
The actor, who has portrayed John Black since 1986 on the NBC daytime show, has a million different workouts from over the years but says that he incorporates a lot of functional movement into his sessions. Natural every day movements, he says of his CrossFit-style workouts. I really think it’s beneficial to incorporate those into workouts because they are just natural movements.
Some days he might do bodyweight only workouts or use a TRX suspension system. He might lift heavy weights on other days or do a favorite circuit-style routine.
My workouts change all the time, says Hogestyn, who played professional baseball before life on screen. You have to keep changing your workouts all the time and keep flummoxing your body and that’s the way to keep yourself sharp.
The workout: Functional fitness
Routine: Earlier in his career, Hogestyn would work out seven days a week. Rest, however, has become an important part of his routine. He will exercise two or three days in a row and then take a rest day.
Nutrition: As focused as he is on fitness, Hogestyn is just as diligent about his diet. In the new book, Days of Our Lives Better Living, he shares that it is important to eat healthfully.
I try not to eat anything that is processed, he says in the book, which includes cast secrets for a healthy life. The more you process food the more you break down all the natural elements.
Focus: Hogestyn is in the gym to get it done. He doesn’t listen to music and is not one to socialize.
You want to stay focused so you can apply yourself to what you are trying to achieve, he says. If you don’t, you can injure yourself.
Great outdoors: Whether it’s gardening, yard work or participating in recreational activities, Hogestyn says he is always outside. From his home in Malibu, Calif., he’s near the ocean where he can kayak, surf or paddleboard.
You are out in the environment, he says. You turn around and look at the shoreline. You have the dolphins, the seagulls. It really is nurturing.
Extracurricular activities: Hogestyn has been practicing tai chi, as a way to relax, for more than 30 years, and he has recently began taking yoga with a friend.
By God, it opened a whole new world, he says. I have found a new platform and it’s opened up channels. I’m not really flexible, I’m not a pretzel person but I’ve gained a lot more flexibility and balance.
Just a tip: Don’t stop moving. Don’t ever give up.
