Shootings already scar new year

The city was barely into the New Year before police were already dealing with a shooting that left three people severely wounded Wednesday morning.

Hours later, officers were called to a second shooting that left a man dead, although that incident appeared to be accidental.

The first shooting happened at midnight at a home in the 4800 block of Reed Street, according to the Fort Wayne Police Department.

Officers who responded to the home found three male victims inside suffering from gunshot wounds, police said.

Paramedics took the three victims to a hospital in serious condition. Once there, a doctor downgraded one victim’s condition to critical.

None of the victims’ names has been released, and detectives are investigating.

The victims were attending a party at the home, according to police. At some point, several people from the party went onto the back patio.

As soon as they did, they later told police, they heard gunshots.

No arrests had been made by late Wednesday, and police had not identified any suspects.

Just before 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, city officers were called to a home in the 3600 block of Logan Avenue in reference to an unrelated shooting.

At the home, officers found a man suffering from a single gunshot wound. Paramedics arrived and pronounced him dead, police said.

Although at first it was unclear what had happened, police said Wednesday night it appeared that the man had shot himself accidentally.

The Allen County coroner will rule on the exact manner and cause of death.
