Mother, child escape home blaze

FORT WAYNE – A woman woke to the smell of smoke Thursday morning and got out with her child as the smoke detectors sounded, according to a statement issued by the Fort Wayne Fire Department.

It said firefighters went to 3802 Brentwood Ave. about 9:40 a.m. When they arrived, they saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the front of the house.

The fire was quickly extinguished although the house sustained heavy damage, the department said. No injuries were reported.

The cause is under investigation.
