Panel to consider Ohio school innovation grants

– A state legislative panel is preparing to vote on the first round of education innovation grants through Ohio’s new Straight A Fund.

The Ohio Controlling Board considers $88 million in recommended grant funding on Monday. The fund’s governing board selected the 24 finalists from among 569 applicants.

Finalists include traditional public school districts, e-schools, museums, nonprofits and colleges.

Republican Gov. John Kasich launched the $250 million fund in September as part of the two-year state operating budget.

The program aims to reward creative ideas that significantly boost student achievement, reduce spending or target an impressive share of resources into the classroom.

Its critics say the structure of the grant program sends money to only a few entities while districts across the state could use additional funding for their operations.
