Churubusco blaze at assistant chief’s

Churubusco-Smith Township firefighters were called to the assistant fire chief’s house Thursday after he discovered smoke in his attic and kitchen.

Fire Chief Chris Tomlinson said the assistant chief and his wife were inside their home located about a mile north of Churubusco near U.S. 33 and County Road 600 North when they smelled smoke and began searching the house.

The fire took place at the home of Assistant Chief Kris Bair and his wife, Missy, according to the fire department’s Facebook page.

Tomlinson said the couple found smoke in the attic and under the stove and called 911.

When crews arrived at 2:25 p.m., the blaze had spread to the attic and walls, Tomlinson said.

Drivers on U.S. 33 north of Churubusco were rerouted for at least an hour Thursday as crews worked to contain the blaze.

It took firefighters about an hour to bring the fire under control, Tomlinson said.

The house sustained heavy smoke, fire and water damage.

No one was injured in the fire, which remains under investigation.
