North Side boys, South Side girls top seeds for SAC tourney

– The North Side boys and South Side girls were named the top seeds for the SAC basketball tournament, voted on by the league’s coaches and announced Tuesday.

“There’s no pressure, it is a motivator,” South Side junior Chelsea Rogers said of the No. 1 seed. “It is a good thing for us. It just motivates us to stay on top.”

The Archers (3-2) have won the last two SAC tournament titles.

“It gives us a lot of confidence because we have won the last couple of years, and we want to win again,” Rogers said. “We won’t settle for anything less.”

South Side has won three of the last four SAC tournament titles with an appearance in seven straight championship games, putting a bull’s-eye on the Archers’ backs.

The Archers lost three starters from last year’s Class 4A state runner-up team.

“It seems like everybody gets really excited to play us, and I don’t know why that is,” South Side senior Brittni Clopton said. “I have seen some of the comments online, and everybody seems to think we are rebuilding … but I think we are just as strong as we were last year.”

For the girls, Bishop Luers is the second seed, Concordia No. 3, Snider No. 4, Northrop No. 5, Wayne No. 6, Bishop Dwenger No. 7 and North Side No. 8.

The Redskins boys are off to a 2-0 start.

“It’s a credit to our kids that the coaches in our conference think so highly of our team,” North Side coach Shabaz Khaliq said. “At the same time, being the No. 1 seed comes with high expectations.”

For the boys, three-time defending champion Northrop is the No. 6 seed.

Snider is the No. 2 seed, Wayne No. 3, Bishop Dwenger No. 4, Concordia No. 5, South Side No. 7 and Bishop Luers No. 8.

The SAC tournament is sponsored by SportONE Northeast.
