SOUTH BEND, Ind. – A northern Indiana college has received the second-largest donation in its history to fund scholarships for military veterans and their families.
Holy Cross College announced Wednesday that the Roman Catholic school in South Bend had received $2 million from the estate of the late Guy “David” Gundlach and the Elkhart County Community Foundation for the scholarship.
The new Nicholas Spehar Memorial Scholarship will help up to 20 students annually attend the college. It’s named after for Spehar, a 24-year-old Navy SEAL from Minnesota killed in combat in Afghanistan in 2011. His sister had attended Holy Cross College.
Gundlach was a graduate of Elkhart Memorial High School who became an insurance industry and business leader. He died of a heart attack two months after Spehar’s helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan
