FORT WAYNE – The Carroll defense bounced back after early adversity.
Homestead couldnt get a handle on the ball right away on the opening kickoff, and a Spartan appeared to have his momentum take him into the end zone for a safety. But the officials ruled the ball carrier was down by contact at the 1-yard line.
Homestead then completed a 99-yard scoring drive with a 58-yard touchdown pass from Logan Ormsby to John Lark for a 7-0 lead. Carroll (8-2) adjusted and went on to a 49-7 victory in the opening game of a Class 6A sectional on Friday.
I thought that was a safety, but sometimes calls dont go your way, Carroll senior Drue Tranquill said. We knew coming in it was going to be on the defense. The offense was doing its thing.
The Spartans (5-5) finished with 250 yards.
The play worked twice, in different ways.
First, Norwell receiver Reggie Hayes threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to Nathan Burrows on a reverse option pass. Then Piercen Harnish faked the reverse to Hayes and raced 46 yards un-breathed upon for another score.
It was a nice bag of tricks Norwell coach Jeff Miller broke out in a 45-28 Class 4A sectional win over Columbia City, even if hes a reluctant trickster.
I looked at what we ran last week, and we ran the quarterback sweep a lot against them, so we put the little reverse pass in there with Reggie, because Reggies an ex-quarterback, Miller said. And then later on they were really keying it again, so we thought they would fall for the fake and they did and Piercen got loose.
I dont like using trick plays, but youve got to have em ready, especially this time of year. Id rather line up and run right over you for 12 plays, but Columbia City fought us really hard all night on that. We had to do what we could.
Heritage coach Dean Lehrman is going to miss his teams games with Garrett.
The Patriots and Railroaders played for the last time in the foreseeable future in Heritages 41-38 Class 3A sectional victory. Garrett is leaving the ACAC to join the NECC next season.
I really hate to see Garrett leave our conference, Lehrman said. Its been a great rivalry, and Im going to miss playing them. Theyre a great football team, and coach (Chris) DePew does a great job.
