DANVERS, Mass. – The mother of the Massachusetts teenager accused of killing his teacher inside a school bathroom is brokenhearted over the educators death and seeks prayers for her son, according to a statement released Saturday by her sons defense attorney.
Diana Chism also asked for prayers for the family of slain Danvers High School teacher Colleen Ritzer, saying her heart is broken for the Ritzer family and the loss of their daughter and sister.
Fourteen-year-old Philip Chism is being held without bail on charges he killed Ritzer after school Tuesday, then dumped her body in the woods behind the school. He was arrested Wednesday.
Authorities have offered no clues on Chisms alleged motive or how the 24-year-old math teacher was killed.
Deputy kills self after taking hostage
Authorities in eastern Pennsylvania say an off-duty deputy sheriff took another off-duty officer hostage at gunpoint, then fatally shot himself.
Police say Carbon County Deputy Sheriff David Midas, 33, went Friday night to the Lansford police station where he was a part-time officer. Investigators say he took ammunition and an unmarked police car and drove to the home of another off-duty officer and took him hostage.
Midas then drove to nearby Jim Thorpe. A struggle began and Midas shot himself in the head. He died early Saturday at a hospital.
Dog wanting treats starts fire; pet OK
Fire officials say a dog reaching for treats turned on a stove and started a fire causing smoke damage to an apartment in Wenatchee, Wash.
Fire Marshal Mark Yaple tells KPQ the residents were not at home when fire crews arrived. He says emergency crews were able to revive the dog with mouth-to-snout resuscitation.
Floods kill dozens in southeast India
Days of torrential rains have unleashed floods in southeast India that have killed dozens of people and forced the evacuation of more than 70,000 others from hundreds of low-lying villages.
As of Saturday, 39 people had died in flood-related incidents since the rains began Monday, according to officials quoted by the Press Trust of India.
Iran hangs militants guards ambushed
Iran hanged 16 rebels of an unspecified armed group Saturday in retaliation for the death of 14 border guards in clashes near the frontier with Pakistan, a semiofficial news agency reported.
The executions took place hours after the rebels ambushed the border guards near Saravan in southeast Iran, Fars agency quoted a local judicial official as saying.
