A man was shot and killed in the front yard of a house southeast of Fort Wayne Saturday night, Allen County police said.
Emergency dispatchers received a call about 8:30 p.m. about shots fired at 4914 E. Tillman Road, near Wayne Trace.
Cpl. Jeremy Tinkel, a county police spokesman, said officers arrived at the ranch-style house to find a man with gunshot wounds in the yard, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Late Saturday, detectives were still trying to figure out what happened. “At this point, we really don’t have much to go on,” Tinkel said.
Authorities did not release the man’s identity. Tinkel said it was not clear if the man lived at the home.
As news of the death spread, family and friends gathered at the scene and lined East Tillman Road with their parked cars. That stretch of road was closed to traffic as police investigated.
Near a corner of the house, the man’s body rested under a white sheet. On the other side of the yard, next to the driveway, dozens of yellow evidence markers flagged what were possibly shell casings.
Tinkel said police had no word on a motive or a description of the shooter. No arrests were made.
The Allen County Coroner’s Office is expected to confirm the victim’s cause of death. This case aside, 38 deaths in Allen County and Fort Wayne have been ruled homicides so far this year, marking a 15-year high.
