Harry White II conceded to an Allen Superior Court jury Tuesday that he stabbed and strangled a woman, then took her car.
But he was not trying to kill her, he said.
White, 44, is on trial on charges of attempted murder, intimidation, auto theft, strangulation and interference with the reporting of a crime.
The jury heard testimony Tuesday from the victim as well as police officers who found White in possession of the vehicle with dried blood still on his clothes and the outside of the car.
The trial is expected to last until this afternoon.
According to court documents, the woman told police she had been living with White for seven years.
In June, she returned to their home and White was in the shower.
After he got dressed, he followed her into the bedroom and attacked her, angry because she hadnt taken him to work the week before, according to court documents.
