A man in a wheelchair was killed when he was struck by a train at a railroad crossing in Kendallville, police said.
Kendallville Police Chief Rob Wiley said the man was taking the sidewalk over the crossing near the citys downtown when he was hit by the freight train about 5:15 p.m. Tuesday. He was identified as Anthony Ray Sills, 41.
Witnesses told police that the railroad crossing gates were down across traffic lanes and that its warning lights and bells were working as the train approached.
The train stopped after the collision and remained there for hours while police investigated.
