An Angola man has turned himself in after stabbing a man to death over the weekend in front of his wife and 3-year-old son, Steuben County authorities said.
Kenny Rogers Fletcher, 41, had his initial court hearing Tuesday on a murder charge in the death of Wilbur Renshaw.
On Saturday night, Renshaw walked to Washington Square Apartments, near North Washington and East Mill streets in Angola, to talk with Fletcher, who lived in the complex, Chief Deputy Prosecutor Jeremy Musser said.
Musser said Renshaw went there with his wife and son to clear up some allegations of somebody being called a snitch. Musser could not elaborate on what that meant, saying it was under investigation.
A confrontation between Fletcher and Renshaw occurred outside the apartment complex. And at some point, Fletcher hit Renshaw in the head, knocking him down. Fletcher then got on top of Renshaw and stabbed him several times with a knife, Musser said.
Police were called to the apartment complex about 9:30 p.m. The victim was found lying facedown in blood in the roadway, Musser said.
Renshaw, 39, was bleeding from his neck and chest. He was taken to Cameron Memorial Community Hospital in Angola where he later died.
On Tuesday, Musser said Renshaws son was with his family, but he did not know how the boy was faring.
Obviously, one would assume it was extremely traumatic, Musser said of the slaying.
Fletcher, who fled from the stabbing scene Saturday night, turned himself in Monday night at the Steuben County Jail, Musser said. Fletcher was being held without bail.
