Leaders with the Plumbers & Steamfitters Local 166 marked Industry Advancement and Apprenticeship Promotion Week by offering tours of their training center this week. The local, which is promoting its five-year apprenticeship program, hopes to make it an annual event.
The center at 2930 W. Ludwig Road trains students in plumbing, pipefitting, welding and heating and air conditioning work. Almost 700 members belong to the local, which helps them find jobs with 35 contractor members.
Among those who can benefit from the profession are business owners, Local 166 officials said. Skilled trades workers can show companies how to reduce energy costs.
The training center also provides career options for current and future high school graduates, officials said. Graduates of the apprenticeship program earn an associate degree in their trade from Ivy Tech Northeast.
