An underage Kosciusko County driver had to jump from a vehicle before it sank into Silver Lake on Saturday after he mistakenly pressed the gas pedal instead of the brake while backing up a boat trailer.
At about 10:40 a.m., Aubert Clevenger, 15, was attempting to back his uncles vehicle with an attached boat trailer down a ramp to launch a boat into Silver Lake.
Clevenger is not a licensed driver, according to a release from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
An Indiana Conservation Officer said Clevenger panicked and pushed the gas pedal, causing the vehicle and trailer to accelerate into the lake and become submerged. Clevenger jumped from the vehicle and swam to shore.
The vehicle ended up about 25 yards from shore, with only the back hatch visible above water, the release said.
The vehicle was later recovered by the Kosciusko County Sheriffs Department SCUBA team.
The teens uncle, David Swihart, 55, was in the boat when he allowed Clevenger to back the trailer down the ramp.
No charges were filed against Swihart.
