Fort Wayne police have identified the driver of a semi whose leg was amputated so he could be freed from the wreckage of a crash early Tuesday on Interstate 69.
Dmitry Naumov, 49, of Oakville, Ontario, was driving south on I-69 near Goshen Road about 12:20 a.m. when the semi went off the west side of the highway for unknown reasons, police said. The rig broke through a concrete sound barrier and ran into a hillside.
Naumov became pinned in the cab from his waist down, and firefighters worked for about 2 1/2 hours trying to free him.
When his condition started to deteriorate, a paramedic, with over-the-radio guidance from a doctor at Lutheran Hospital, amputated part of Naumovs leg. He was freed shortly before 3 a.m., authorities said.
Naumov was in critical condition Wednesday, police said.
The crash remains under investigation.
