That didn’t take long. The Steuben County Sheriff’s Department is getting reports of phone scams involving the new Affordable Health Care Act and insurance marketplace.
The scam targets people on Medicare and who are told that they are being called to issue another card in response to the insurance changes.
The sheriff’s department urges residents to avoid giving any information to these callers. It said they have been asking for banking information.
Medicare is not calling to get information for a second card from anyone, the department said.
It urged family and friends to spread the word, particularly older residents who might be targeted by these criminals.
