Police have arrested a man accused of raping a woman while he was in Fort Wayne for a military drill that was part of his service with the Indiana National Guard.
A four-month investigation culminated Thursday with the arrest of Jared L. Smith, 29, of Portage, at the National Guard Armory in Fort Wayne, according to state police.
Smith is charged with rape in Allen County Superior Court. He was expected to post a $10,000 bond Friday night to be released from the Allen County Lockup, a jail official said.
According to state police, a 22-year-old woman, an acquaintance of Smith, reported that Smith raped her in June in a Fort Wayne hotel room while she was sleeping. When the woman awoke, he stopped having sex with her and left the room, state police said.
In an interview with police, Smith acknowledged having sex with the woman but said it was consensual, court papers stated.
