FORT WAYNE – A woman shot and critically injured in Fort Wayne on Wednesday night has been identified.
Jaleisa Veazey, 24, of New Haven, was shot in the 4500 block of Warsaw Street, the Fort Wayne Police Department said in a statement issued Thursday morning. It said she remains in critical condition.
It was the third Fort Wayne shooting in the last week in which someone was critically injured.
Just before 7:30 p.m., police officers found the injured woman in the driver's seat of a gray Chrysler parked in the 4500 block of Warsaw, said Jason Anthony, a police spokesman.
Witnesses told police that a dark-colored sport utility vehicle going south on Warsaw pulled alongside the car and someone in the SUV opened fire.
The SUV was last seen headed south on Warsaw. The windows on the passenger side may have been shot out, Anthony said.
A friend of the victim was in the passenger seat of the Chrysler at the time of the shooting. He was not wounded, and detectives interviewed him along with other witnesses, Anthony said.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Fort Wayne Police Department at 427-1222.
