A police officer was seriously hurt late Thursday when his squad car crashed into a pole on the city’s southeast side.
The officer was driving on Wayne Trace, just north of Drexel Avenue, and went off the road about 10:15 p.m. The driver’s side of the squad car struck the pole next to a former gas station on the west side of the road.
A sergeant at the scene said the officer was taken to a hospital in serious condition. The officer’s name was not released.
A woman told The Journal Gazette that she had pulled over to let the squad car pass her and she then came upon the crash.
“I seen him wrapped around the pole with his sirens and lights on so I called 911,” said the woman, who declined to give her name for privacy reasons.
The woman said she called 911 and police and medic arrived soon afterward.
It was not clear what sort of call the officer was responding to.
