FORT WAYNE – A 22-year-old man ended up in a fatal confrontation early Wednesday after he went to his alleged killers house to speak with his ex-girlfriend, according to court documents filed Thursday.
William Martin, 38, was arrested shortly after the shooting and preliminarily charged with aggravated battery in Joseph Conwells death.
According to court documents, Conwell was outside Martins house, and he wanted to speak with his ex-girlfriend. She heard him asking to talk with her so she went into the backyard and spoke with him for several minutes while Martin stood by, court documents stated.
Eventually, Conwells ex-girlfriend started to walk to the front of the house to go back inside. When she was out of sight of the two men, she heard a gunshot. She saw Conwell running toward the alley behind the house before collapsing by a sport utility vehicle. She gave first aid to Conwell and called 911, court documents said.
When police officers arrived about 2:20 a.m., they found Conwell critically wounded in the alley between Lillie and Winter streets, near Eckart Street. Medics took him to Lutheran Hospital where he later died.
Martin, who ran from the scene, was quickly found in the neighborhood and arrested, police said.
The ex-girlfriend told police that Martin has a 9 mm handgun that he always carries with him. At the shooting scene, police found a 9 mm shell casing, court documents said.
Police said earlier that investigators believed the shooting stemmed from a dispute over a woman and a previous incident of vandalism.
Conwells death was the 31st homicide in Allen County this year. That tops last years total of 30 and is an eight-year high.
Martin was being held Thursday night at the Allen County Jail. His bail was $250,000.
