Sewer smoke tests to begin Monday
Fort Wayne City Utilities will be smoke testing sewer lines Monday in many neighborhoods in an area bounded by Stellhorn Road and Rothman Road, just east of St. Joe Road and west of Laymeyer Road. The testing should take about eight weeks.
Smoke testing allows crews to find leaks and other problems contributing to sewer overflows. During the procedure, crews will blow smoke into manholes to test sections of sewer and storm lines.
The smoke is nontoxic, nonstaining, has no odor and creates no fire hazard.
Residents may see smoke coming out of manholes and inlets or out of the ground, from building gutters, downspouts or plumbing vents on roofs. Smoke should not enter any homes.
If it does enter a home, it could mean a drain tap is dry or there is a plumbing issue. If residents find smoke in their home, they should leave and look for City Utilities crews, who will be nearby conducting the tests. If residents are away and return home to find smoke, they should call 311.
Judge removes self from hog lawsuit
A northern Indiana judge has disqualified himself from presiding over a youth camps bid to stop a nearby farmer from raising about 9,200 hogs.
Carroll County Circuit Judge Benjamin Diener filed an order last week removing himself from YMCA Camp Tecumsehs lawsuit against the White County commissioners. Dieners father is one of the three commissioners who voted for the farmers request to rezone seven acres of property for the hog farm.
A new judge will handle the case.
