Kendallville police on Monday said they were investigating a case involving an explosive device found late Sunday night at Maplecrest Apartments, 612 E. Mitchell St.
About 9:55 p.m., an anonymous caller notified police of what appeared to be a bomb, according to a news release. Police officers responded and found the device after a short search and evacuated the building by 10:17 p.m.
The fire department was placed on standby for possible assistance, and an Indiana State Police bomb technician was called to the scene to neutralize the device, which was removed by 10:22 p.m.
The building was searched for additional devices, but none was found, and residents were allowed to return to the building about 10:40 p.m.
Specific information about the device that was found was not released Monday, but the statement from Kendallville police said it would be “processed for possible forensic evidence and then destroyed by bomb technicians.”
