A Peru woman died today when her car went through a stop sign and collided with a semi, the Huntington County coroner's office said tonight.
Barbara E. Eberhart, 77, died at the scene of the 10:51 a.m. crash, the coroner's office said in a statement. The semi driver, Patrick D. Myers, 46, of Kankakee, IIl., was not injured.
The statement said Eberhart was exiting southbound Interstate 69 at the Markle exit and stopped behind a box truck, which was stopped at the stop sign of the U.S. 224 off ramp.
The box truck crossed the intersection, the statement said. Eberhart followed the truck through the stop sign, it said, failing to yield the right of way, and collided with the semi, which struck her car in the driver's door.
Eberhart was extricated from the car by the Markle Volunteer Fire Department, the statement said.
The crash is being investigated by the county sheriff's department, the Indiana State Police Motor Carrier Unit and the coroner's office, the statement said. It said Markle police and Parkview Huntington Hospital also assisted.
