Legislators get health exchange update

Indiana lawmakers will hear a report on the federal health insurance exchange when a summer study committee meets today at the Statehouse. Uninsured Hoosiers – about 13 percent of the population – will be eligible to buy insurance through the federal exchange when it goes into effect next year.

Former Gov. Mitch Daniels, after conferring with Gov.-elect Mike Pence, last year notified the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that Indiana would not establish its own exchange, leaving uninsured Hoosiers to depend on an exchange operated by the federal government.

New GOP chief

Indiana Republican leaders meet today to make official Gov. Mike Pence’s pick for state Republican chairman, state Auditor Tim Berry.

A former Allen County official, Berry is in his second term as auditor after serving two terms as state treasurer. He replaces Eric Holcomb, who was GOP state chairman for nearly three years.

Berry’s selection could bolster Fort Wayne’s bid to host the 2014 Republican state convention. Indiana Democrats held their convention in Fort Wayne last year.
