Wine magazine honors 2 area restaurants

It seems cheers are in order for Joseph Decuis and Eddie Merlot’s.

The two area restaurants were among those recognized by Wine Spectator magazine in its 2013 Restaurant Wine List Awards.

Joseph Decuis, 191 N. Main St. in Roanoke, received the Best of Award of Excellence, and Eddie Merlot’s, 1502 Illinois Road S., earned the Award of Excellence.

The awards are decided based on categories including wine strengths, selections, prices and corkage, as well as restaurant cuisine and ambiance.

The magazine listed 3,793 restaurants worldwide, including 23 in Indiana.

New name, fresh menu

The Potawatomi Inn at Pokagon State Park is turning over a new leaf.

The historic dining room at Potawatomi Inn has been renamed the Lakeview Grille, which is just one of the changes the leadership has made.

“We’re trying to complement the rich history here, but we need to prepare for the next generation of customer while serving the traditional customer,” general manager Michael Barnett says.

The inn plans to revamp the menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Some changes will include locally sourcing food and adding items such as steaks.

The Lakeview Grille is open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Sunday brunch is served from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Cooking for chef tour

To Matt Rogers, executive chef of 800 Degrees Restaurants, being a chef is more than just a profession – it’s a pursuit. A passion. A purpose.

So when he was asked to join the Celebrity Chef Tour benefiting the James Beard Foundation, saying “yes” was easy.

“It’s an amazing honor to be a part of this,” Rogers says in a written statement. “Anything associated with James Beard is an honor; the foundation’s awards are the Oscars of this profession.”

Rogers will showcase Indiana meat and produce in his dish for the dinner, which will take place Thursday at the Joseph Decuis Farm, 191 N. Main St. in Roanoke. He will use duck from Gunthrop Farms in LaGrange and vegetables from Country Garden in southwest Indiana.

The host celebrity chef is Aaron Butts of Joseph Decuis.

Patrons who bring a nonperishable food item to the restaurant, 407 Coliseum Blvd. W., between Monday and July 29 will receive a voucher for a free Sprintster (six-piece) of wings valid for redemption on National Chicken Wing Day, July 29. The food items collected will be donated to Community Harvest Food Bank.
