Purdue president emeritus named Indiana living legend

WEST LAFAYETTE – A former Purdue University president and Indiana University School of Medical dean will be honored as an Indiana living legend next month.

Purdue says in a news release that Dr. Steven Beering will be honored by the Indiana Historical Society on July 19 at a gala at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center in Indianapolis.

The organization annually honors extraordinary Hoosiers for their statewide and national accomplishments.

Beering served as Purdue’s president from 1983 to 2000. Before his Purdue appointment, he was dean of the Indiana University School of Medicine and director of the IU Medical Center in Indianapolis.

During his time at Purdue, more than 30 buildings on the West Lafayette campus were constructed, expanded or renovated.
