Steel beam kills worker at I-70 construction site

HEBRON, Ohio – An Ohio Department of Transportation official says a contract worker on a bridge replacement project was struck by a steel beam and died.

ODOT District 5 Deputy Director Joe Rutherford said the accident happened Friday morning as a crane was being used to move a beam at the work site along Interstate 70 south of Hebron, about 30 miles east of Columbus. Rutherford said he wasn’t sure exactly what went wrong.

The Licking County Coroner’s Office identified the worker as 34-year-old Micah Montgomery of Waverly. Workplace safety investigators were on the scene.

Rutherford said the contractor on the project was Double Z Construction of Columbus, which is handling the replacement and widening of two bridges on I-70.

A message seeking comment was left for the company.
